Vehicle Maintenance  

 * Mechanic II and Mechanic III Openings 

Under supervision, performs a variety of repairs, and maintenance tasks involving various types of automotive equipment, trucks, vehicles, heavy equipment. All duties are performed in accordance with County safety codes and safe work practices. This position reports to the Senior Service Manager and Shop Manager.  This position is required to report to work during severe weather or emergency situations unless there is approval of the division, and the employee has been specifically contacted by a management representative or management representative’s designee.

Essential Functions

  •  Repairs gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles and related components including transmissions, brakes, drive trains, cooling and electrical systems, alignments, etc.
  • Performs preventative maintenance for all assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic, hand, electric and air-driven tools.
  • Tests, services and repairs vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists and trains mechanics and other personnel in a cooperative manner.
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repairs and maintenance work.
  • Operates forklifts.
  • Assists mechanics with repairs and helps to identify and resolve problems.
  • Ensures shop cleanliness and maintenance on a regular basis.
  • Builds safety checks.
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots problems on vehicles using computerized scanning equipment and lap top computers in order to repair and main vehicles and equipment in the County fleet.
  • Fabricates parts using welding equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Divisional and Departmental management.

Essential Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or two- five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Forklift license or ability to secure one.
  • Ongoing certification in all areas of automotive repair.
  • Knowledge of automotive and truck repair.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance shop practices, techniques, methods and tools used in maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, hose replacement and hose fabricating.
  • Skill in the use of tools and operation of machines and equipment commonly used in the automotive trade.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CDL/Class A license
  • CDL/Class B license with air brake endorsement.
  • Ability to perform NJ State inspections.
  • Ability to perform NJ Diesel emissions test.
  • Knowledge of welders and metal fabricating.
  • Ability to perform vehicle recovery and towing operations.
  • Ability to use a computer, knowledge of PC operations and software, internet.
