Position Summary

The Recovery Support Specialist is responsible for working with individuals in harm reduction and recovery support services assisting them in reducing their risk of serious harm or death while actively using substances while moving toward strengthening their capacity to engage in their personal recovery from substance use disorders and co-occurring problems. The Recovery Support Specialist will help individuals with harm reduction strategies, linkages and referrals to treatment or recovery supports to assist the individual in achieving their goals within their individualized recovery plan. The Recovery Support Specialist will assist individuals in navigating the mental health and substance use system of care, remove barriers to recovery, stay engaged in the recovery process, and live a full life. The Recovery Support Specialist will assist with emotional support for any legal issues, provide transportation for necessary treatment appointments, complete all necessary documentation and/or reports, and maintain a relationship with any legal entities involved.

Essential Functions 

  • Provide peer coaching face to face, in the community, educate and support their safety while actively using substances.
  • Assist the client towards motivation for individually based recovery by teaching and being a role model offering support which includes sharing their recovery experiences while individuals move through the stages of change to encourage them in their recovery
  • Serve as a recovery agent providing advocacy and assistance for the individual to obtain services that meet their recovery needs by providing outreach and engagement via warm hand-offs in the Center and throughout the community, if there is an opening to encourage them to participate in the recovery community activities
  • Contributes to agency performance improvement efforts to assure treatment is in accordance with state regulations and accrediting body standards, Collaborate/communicate with systems partners
  • Documents all activity and correspondence in accordance with Center policy, state regulations, and Joint Commission standards
  • Engage in team meetings and individual supervision
  • Works closely with the CARE Clinical Supervisor on progress towards program goals and to ensure all data collection required for grant reporting is completed
  • Engages in continuing education to maintain and develop clinical skills, meet agency competency standards and satisfy requirements for ongoing licensure
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 Essential Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, criminal justice, education or other behavioral health related field and Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS).
  • Must have relevant experience in providing services and case management to individuals living with a substance use disorder.
  • Has experience in working across cultures.
  • Must possess knowledge in formal/informal community systems and resources.
  • Must have knowledge of Wellness and Recovery Principles, Person Centered Care, Trauma Informed Care and Integrated Healthcare.
  • Must possess a valid NJ driver’s license in good standing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with colleagues, coworkers, vendors, contractors, and the public.

 Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English), and experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services and the ability to collaborate with other professionals.
  • Trained in conducting Substance Use Interventions.
  • Advanced degree in social work, public health, or a related field preferred.
