Equipment Operator - Roads, In-House Only (2)

Essential Functions 

  • Position operates equipment in a safe and timely manner to ensure the efficient operation of the Division in accordance with division policies.
  • Performs skilled and unskilled labor to ensure the efficient operation of the division in accordance with departmental and divisional policies.
  • Maintains, services, cleans, and makes minor repairs of tools and equipment to ensure it is kept in good mechanical working condition.
  • Performs skilled and unskilled labor to ensure the sufficient operation of the division in accordance with division policies.
  • Drives trucks and hauls materials and/or equipment to and from projects in a safe and timely manner.
  • Performs work zone traffic control to ensure the flow of traffic is not disrupted. Picks up recycling materials in a timely manner to ensure the efficient operation of the Public Works Department in accordance with County policies.
  • Performs other related duties in the Department of Public Works as required.
  • Operates spray equipment both hand carried and truck mounted. Uses and maintains hand tools and equipment for brushing of ditches and hand digging of ditches. Prepares necessary reports on brushing activities.
  • Attends training to keep abreast of new safety and work practices established by OSHA.
  • Shovels and rakes all materials used to repair, construct, and maintain roads, bridges, and drainage structures.
  • Cleans culverts, catch basins, and other drainage structures using scavengers and/or hand tools following standardized procedures.
  • Installs and removes snow fence.
  • Drives trucks and hauls materials and equipment to and from projects in a safe and timely manner.
  • Loads and unloads trucks using mechanical equipment as well as manual labor. Inspects and operates all construction based light and heavy equipment as well as equipment orientated trucks including, but not limited to, cement mixers, air compressors, excavation back hoe, front end loaders, sweeper mowers, jet-vac truck, bucket truck, fork lifts and bull dozers in accordance with manufacturers’ recommended procedures to ensure that all equipment is in fit working condition.
  • Physical Strength Rating Assessment as per DOT:  Very Heavy Work; definition of Very Heavy Work:  Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work.

Essential Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by training in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy motorized and mechanized equipment and/or trucks used in road, bridge or drainage structure, construction repair or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of construction techniques including the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. 
  • Must be able to operate two wheel drive tractor loaders, rollers up to five tons, air compressors, cement mixers, sand blasters, bobcat mowers, weed whackers, chain saws, tandems, etc.
  • Valid NJ Drivers License with Class A CDL unrestricted is required or the ability to obtain within 180 days from date of promotion.
  • Acceptable driving record per county standards. No more than 1 DWI conviction within past 10 years; no reckless driving convictions within past 3 years; no more than 9 current points. Investigation of any fatal accident or revocation of driving privileges.

Preferred

  • Ability to utilize power tools; experience in welding, carpentry, and the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Training in the placement and finishing of concrete and blacktop. 
  • Ability to service and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment used in construction and maintenance work.
  • Tanker endorsement.
