The First Assistant Prosecutor supervises the following sections.
Experienced assistant prosecutors are assigned to provide legal advice to each of these Somerset County Prosecutor's Office investigative sections: Major Crimes, Sex Crimes and Family Protection, Special Investigations, and Organized Crime/Narcotics Task Force. The purpose is to provide consistent legal advice to the investigations from the initiation through disposition. The goal is to create high quality criminal cases to insure that justice is done.
Legal Advisory Section
This section has nine assistant prosecutors designated to handle legal issues in the following areas:
- Expungements
- Sexual Harassment Officer
- Ethics Officer
- Affirmative Action Officer
- American Disabilities Act Officer
- Municipal Prosecutor Liaison
- Police Legal Advisor
- Quarterly Newsletter
- Grants
The purpose is to formalize policies and procedures in each of these important areas to create a more efficient operation internally and in cooperation with the municipal and state law enforcement agencies.
Legal Training Section
Two assistant prosecutors constitute this section which is responsible for law enforcement training issues. Instruction is given at the Police Academy to police recruits and veteran officers.
Office of Victim-Witness Advocacy
This office is comprised of a coordinator, three advocates and a secretary. The goal is to assist victims and witnesses through the criminal justice process, keeping them informed of case status, their rights under the Crime Victim’s Bill of Rights and where applicable comply with the Attorney General Standards to Ensure the Rights of Crime Victims.
