The Climate-Informed Disaster Behavioral Health Responder
Thursday, August 24, 2023, 11 am – 12:30 pm
Presenter: Steve Crimando, MA, CTM, DRCC, Director of Training-Disaster & Terrorism Branch
Climate change is real, climate change is here, and climate change has a significant impact on behavioral health. “Climate anxiety” or “eco-anxiety” is defined as a “heightened emotional, mental or somatic distress in response to dangerous changes in climate change” and is causing distress, anger, and other negative emotions in people worldwide. In addition to the trauma caused by the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-fueled disasters, rising global temperatures also play a part in social tensions boiling over in communities, schools and workplaces. There is also an important nexus between climate change and violence potential, ranging from interpersonal violence to civil unrest, extremism and even war. Disaster Behavioral Health Responders must begin to reflect this reality and be in step with the growing body of research addressing climate change and human behavior. Join us for this special virtual presentation addressing the impact of climate change on Disaster Behavioral Health Response.
