Exploring our Beliefs of Trauma and Addiction
Past, Present and Future

Thursday, May 25, 2023, 1:30 pm – 3 pm

Presenter: Roseann Cervelli MS, LCADC, CCS, CPS of Central Jersey Family Health Consortium

May is National Trauma Awareness Month. For decades, we have sought to understand and help those suffering from addiction and trauma. Sometimes we succeeded and sometimes we failed.

Today, we are approaching new therapeutic thresholds for helping those who suffer from these diagnoses.

This presentation is a heartfelt invitation to substance use and mental health providers, therapists, counselors, medical professionals, teachers, and providers of human services to:

  1. Update and deepen our definitions of Addiction and Trauma
  2. Explore our personal and clinical paradigms about the complex nature of Addiction and Trauma and their many levels of expression in those affected
  3. Delve into early childhood trauma and its life-long impact on the development of a healthy, emotionally regulated nervous system
  4. Reflect upon the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of past and present-day recovery treatment modalities and practices
  5. Discuss potential future therapies for health and healing of Addiction and Trauma

“For me, no matter what the addiction is, it is an attempt to reduce emotional pain. So, the mantra I keep repeating is not, “why the addiction,” but “why the pain?” In order to heal the addiction, we must look at the underlying trauma.” –Gabor Mate
