Somerset County Search and Rescue Field Team

The Somerset County Search and Rescue Team (SAR) consists of Field Search Technicians, Search Planners and Medical Specialists. The team can provide operations and planning support to the municipalities during lost or missing person incidents and wide area searches. The team can be requested to assist with both operations and/or planning.

Somerset County Search and Rescue K9 Unit

The Somerset County Search and Rescue K9 Unit (SAR) currently consists of one Certified K9, a K9 Handler, and Flankers (Field Mapping/Orienteering Specialists). These types of K9s are specifically trained for lost/missing civilians. This team should be activated when a civilian of non-combative nature is reported lost or missing. Based off certification, this unit can currently provide two services to the Somerset County community.

Air Scent K9 – When the lost/missing individual is reported to be in a wilderness setting or contained to a structure. This K9 is able to clear areas that have not been heavily contaminated with human traffic (i.e.: woods, fields, abandoned structures, schools after hours, etc.).

K9 Resource Subject Matter Expertise – When a lost/missing individual is reported, K9 resources may be called in. Due to the various different types of K9s, each having their own specific job, we can assist by evaluating the situation, providing feedback on which resource to choose, and assistance with coordinating that resource. Based on the situation we can also provide on-scene support for this resource when they arrive.
