The Planning Division operates under the guidance of the Somerset County Planning Board, whose members are appointed by the Somerset County Board of County Commissioners.

• Responsible for land development review and the preparation of the Somerset County Master Plan and its various elements.
• Oversees transportation projects, open space and historic preservation, wastewater management, resiliency, housing and sustainability initiatives.
• Leads regional planning initiatives and studies.
• Reviews and provides assistance and technical guidance to the County’s municipalities and planning partners regarding land use, redevelopment, transportation, planning and development regulations and legislation, housing, demographics, mapping, and much more.

Planning Division staff provides assistance to partnering entities such as the Somerset County Energy Council, Regional Center Partnership of Somerset County and the Raritan Valley Rail Coalition.
